The 33-point rule
| Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Sum | Mean | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 7.5 | 7.5 | 33 | 8.25 | 8.5 |
| 8.5 | 8.5 | 8 | 8 | 33 | 8.25 | 8.5 |
| 9 | 8.5 | 7.5 | 8 | 33 | 8.25 | 8.5 |
| 8.5 | 8.5 | 7.5 | 8 | 32.5 | 8.125 | 8.0 |
Half a band decides it: the last profile rounds down to 8.0. The general rule is that an overall band needs a sum of at least , so 31 for Band 8, 33 for 8.5 and 35 for 9.
Raw-score targets (typical conversions; they vary slightly between test versions):
| Skill | Band 8.5 | Band 9 | Practise to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 37–38 / 40 | 39–40 | 38+ |
| Academic Reading | 37–38 / 40 | 39–40 | 38+ |
| General Training Reading | 39 / 40 | 40 | 39+ |
Moving Listening from 33/40 (Band 7.5) to 38/40 (Band 8.5) means recovering five answers, usually lost to a few identifiable causes. Moving Writing from 7 to 8 means changing how you write, which takes longer. So most 8.5 candidates make Listening and Reading near-perfect first, then push Writing and Speaking to 7.5–8.
Where Band 7–7.5 candidates lose their points
| Skill | Loss pattern | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Spelling, plurals and word limits on completion answers | 1–2 marks |
| Listening | Distractors: the first detail mentioned is corrected or rejected | 1–2 marks |
| Listening | Losing your place in Parts 3–4 after one miss, then missing the next two | 2–3 marks |
| Reading | FALSE versus NOT GIVEN; headings matched by shared keywords | 2–3 marks |
| Reading | Passage 3 rushed because Passage 1 overran | 2–4 marks |
| Writing | Task 2 ideas listed rather than developed; one part of the question answered thinly | Task Response stuck at 6–7 |
| Writing | Task 1 overview missing, buried or full of figures | Task Achievement held at about 5 |
| Writing | Frequent small errors: articles, agreement, countability, comma splices | Grammar stuck at 7 |
| Speaking | Short Part 3 answers, rehearsed phrases, pauses to search for words | Fluency and vocabulary stuck at 7 |
What moves Writing and Speaking from 7 to 8+
| Criterion | Band 7 in practice | Band 8+ in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Task Achievement / Response | Every part covered; main ideas extended, though some support is general | Every part handled thoroughly; each idea explained and backed with specific, relevant support |
| Coherence and Cohesion | Clear progression; some linkers over-used or slightly off | The logic carries the reader; referencing and linking are accurate and hardly noticed |
| Lexical Resource (Writing) | Some less common words, with occasional errors in choice or collocation | Precise, less common vocabulary and natural collocation, with rare slips |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy (Writing) | Frequent error-free sentences | Most sentences error-free across a wide range of structures |
| Fluency and Coherence | Speaks at length, with some hesitation to find language | Pauses only to think about ideas; answers develop logically |
| Lexical Resource (Speaking) | Some idiomatic language, some choices that don’t quite fit | Idiomatic and less common language used skilfully; paraphrase is smooth |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy (Speaking) | Frequent error-free complex sentences, some persistent errors | Most sentences error-free, with flexible complex structures |
| Pronunciation | Stress, intonation and chunking mostly effective | A wide range of features used flexibly; effortless to follow |
Eight habits of Band 8.5+ candidates
- Bank the receptive 18. Treat Listening and Reading as 18 band points to secure, and give every practice miss a cause.
- Make spelling and word limits automatic. Every completion answer must be spelled correctly, fit the grammar of the gap and respect the limit. In Reading, copy and paste words from the passage.
- Read at the level of qualifiers. In True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given, one word such as some, first, only, caused or doubled decides the answer.
- Plan Task 2 for five minutes, then develop two ideas deeply. Use point → explanation → specific example → consequence. Depth, not the number of ideas, is what Band 8 rewards.
- Put the overview first in Task 1, straight after the one-sentence introduction, so it is never squeezed out.
- Proofread against your personal error list. Keep a list of your five most frequent errors from graded work. Spend the last 3 minutes of Task 1 and the last 5 of Task 2 looking only for them.
- Treat Part 3 answers as short spoken essays. Give a position, a reason, an example and a qualification in 30–60 seconds. When a word is missing, paraphrase instead of pausing.
- Log errors by cause and redo them cold. Tag Listening and Reading misses S (spelling or format), D (distractor), L (wrong location), M (misread meaning) or P (pace), and Writing and Speaking feedback by criterion. Redo every miss 3 and 10 days later.
Week-by-week plan to Band 8.5
This plan assumes a diagnostic result of about 7.0–7.5 overall (Listening and Reading 30–34/40, Writing and Speaking 6.5–7) and 10–12 hours a week. From 6.5 or below, allow 12–16 weeks by repeating weeks 2–5. The daily schedule is in Study plan: 8 weeks to Band 8.5.
| Week | Focus | Checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Diagnostic (70 min). Listening prediction and form completion; Reading skimming, scanning and 17–20–23 timing; Task 2 question types | Baseline per skill; error log started |
| 2 | Listening multiple choice, matching and maps; True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given; Task 2 planning and development (2 graded essays) | TFNG and YNNG banks 85%+ |
| 3 | Listening Parts 3–4; headings, matching information and features; Task 1 structure (report or letter); Speaking Parts 1–2 | Listening sets 35+/40 |
| 4 | Full mock for your version. Coherence and cohesion; Speaking Part 3 | Listening and Reading 35+; Writing and Speaking 7+ |
| 5 | Reading completion types, sentence endings and multiple choice; every Task 1 visual or letter type; lexical resource; pronunciation | Reading sets 37+/40 |
| 6 | Grammatical range and accuracy with your error list; a full recorded Speaking test; two timed Listening tests | Listening 37+; Task 2 graded 7.5+ |
| 7 | Second full mock (an official practice test works well). Clear the two weakest topics in your error log | Band sum 32.5+ |
| 8 | Final full test under exam conditions; taper; read IELTS test day: timings, rules and mindset. Book the test once week 6 is on target | Two consecutive results summing to 33+ |
Common traps
Quick recap
- Band 8.5 needs a band sum of 33: typically 9 + 9 + 7.5 + 7.5 or 8.5 + 8.5 + 8 + 8.
- Train Listening and Reading to 38+/40 (39+ for General Training Reading).
- In Writing, develop fewer ideas more deeply, lead Task 1 with the overview, and proofread against your own error list.
- In Speaking, extend Part 3 answers with reasons, examples and qualifications, and paraphrase instead of pausing.
- Log every miss by cause, redo it cold, and book the test when two consecutive mocks sum to 33+.
