What the exam asks
You are given a list of statements and must decide whether each one agrees with the factual information in the passage.
| Answer | What it means | The test to apply |
|---|---|---|
| TRUE | The passage gives the same information, usually in different words. | Every part of the statement is supported. |
| FALSE | The passage gives information that contradicts the statement. | The statement and the passage cannot both be true. |
| NOT GIVEN | The passage does not give enough information to decide. | For all the passage tells you, the statement could be true or false. |
- Statements follow the order of the passage. The answer to Question 5 is located after the answer to Question 4.
- TFNG tests facts: dates, numbers, sequences, causes and comparisons. Questions on the writer’s views or claims use YES / NO / NOT GIVEN instead.
- The task appears in Academic passages of every kind and in all three General Training sections, including short notices and workplace policies.
- On computer you click TRUE, FALSE or NOT GIVEN for each statement. Every correct answer is 1 mark.
Core ideas
TRUE means every part is supported
Split each statement into its separate claims. “The museum’s first exhibition, held in 1921, attracted more than 10,000 visitors” makes three claims: that this was the first exhibition, that it was held in 1921, and that it drew over 10,000 visitors.
- The passage supports all three → TRUE.
- The passage contradicts any one of them (for example, it says 1923) → FALSE.
- The passage supports two and is silent on the third → NOT GIVEN.
TRUE rarely uses the passage’s exact words. Expect synonyms (commercial failure = made a loss), word-class changes (the decline of = declined) and reordering.
