Numbers to 10,000: I can say what each digit in a 4-digit number is worth, compare numbers and count in steps.
Here is 3,452 made with place value counters: 3 thousands, 4 hundreds, 5 tens and 2 ones.
3,452 = 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 2
The digit 3 stands for 3 thousands, so its value is 3,000. The 4 is worth 400.

In a place value chart, each digit has its own column: thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
Here is 4,071. It has 4 thousands, 0 hundreds, 7 tens and 1 one.
No hundreds, so we write 0 in the hundreds column. The 0 keeps the 7 in the tens column.

Your turn: Here is 6,284. What is the value of the digit 2?

Choose one:
- 2
- 20
- 200
- 2,000
Answer
The answer: 200
200. The 2 sits in the hundreds column, so it is worth 2 hundreds, which is 200.
