What the exam asks
In Listen to an Announcement, you hear a 40–85-word message in a school-related context: a classroom, campus radio, an orientation, a library, a club event, or an office. The recording plays once only.
Typical question targets are:
- Purpose: Why is the speaker making the announcement?
- Logistics/details: When, where, who, what changed, what is required?
- Inference/action: What are listeners expected to do now?
- Rules and exceptions: Who must do something, who does not need to, and what happens if they ignore the rule?
You will usually get 2 multiple-choice questions with 4 options each.
Core ideas
Recognize the purpose from the opening
Most announcements reveal their purpose in the first few seconds. Listen for the frame, not just the topic.
| Opening cue | Likely purpose |
|---|---|
| “Please note...” / “This is a reminder...” | remind |
| “Due to...” / “Because of...” | report a change or problem |
| “You are invited to...” / “We’d like to encourage...” | invite |
| “For safety reasons...” / “Students must...” | warn or give rules |
| “Congratulations to...” | congratulate or celebrate |
A purpose question is asking: What is this message doing? Not: What topic is it about?
