What the exam asks
In Read an Academic Passage, you read a short expository text from areas like life science, history, economics, or social science, then answer exactly 5 questions.
Typical question types in this lesson area are:
- Main idea: the overall point of the passage, or sometimes of a paragraph
- Factual detail: what the passage directly states
- Negative factual: which option is NOT stated or is NOT true according to the passage
- Vocabulary in context: what a word or phrase means in that sentence
- Reference: what a pronoun or noun phrase such as it, these findings, or the former refers to
What to expect:
- The passage stays on screen while you answer.
- No background knowledge is required.
- Wrong answers usually look plausible because they reuse passage words but distort the meaning.
- Reading is multistage adaptive: everyone starts with a routing module, then gets an easier or harder second module. So accurate reading early matters.
Core ideas
Main idea: find the topic and the controlling idea
A main-idea question is not asking for a detail. It asks what the passage is mostly about and what the author is saying about that topic.
