In a specific heat capacity experiment: mass =0.500±0.001 kg, energy supplied =4800±50 J, temperature rise =8.0±0.5 °C. Which measurement should be improved, and how?
Percentage uncertainties: mass 0.2%, energy 1.0%, temperature 6.3%. The temperature rise dominates.
Improvements: use a digital thermometer reading to 0.1 °C, and heat for longer to get a rise of about 20 °C. The percentage uncertainty then falls to about 0.2/20=1%. Insulating the block also reduces the systematic error from energy loss.
