What 1550 requires
| Reading and Writing | Math | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions seen | 54 (2 × 27) | 44 (2 × 22) |
| Time per question | about 71 seconds | about 95 seconds |
| Misses allowed for about 770–780 | 2 | 2 |
| Where top scorers still miss | hard Words in Context, Inferences, Cross-Text | parameter, circle and abstract-function items |
Pretest items are unmarked, so treat every question as scored. There is no guessing penalty, so never leave a blank.
Where 1400–1500 scorers lose their points
| Loss pattern | What it looks like | Typical cost per test |
|---|---|---|
| Module 1 carelessness | A sign slip on Math question 4, or a comma splice missed on an easy Conventions item | 2–4 questions, plus the risk of an easier route |
| Vocabulary ceiling | Two choices remain on a hard Words in Context item and you don’t know the precise meaning of one | 2–3 questions |
| Scope errors in reading | Choosing an answer that is true or plausible but not supported by this text | 2–4 questions |
| Hard-algebra stamina | Running out of time or ideas on the last 3–4 Math questions of module 2 | 2–3 questions |
| Tool friction | Solving by hand what Desmos solves in 30 seconds, or mistyping into Desmos | 1–2 questions |
Score bands: what each level looks like
| Total | What you can reliably do |
|---|---|
| 1550–1600 | Near-perfect module 1. Conventions rules are automatic, near-synonyms are separated by precise meaning, and parameter, discriminant and circle questions are solved by hand and checked in Desmos. Misses are one or two genuinely hard items. |
| 1500–1540 | Strong everywhere. You still lose 3–4 per section, usually to a hard inference, a vocabulary gap or a timing squeeze at the end of Math module 2. |
| 1400–1490 | Solid on medium items. Hard module 2 questions are right about half the time, and one or two careless misses happen in every module. |
| 1300–1390 | You usually reach the harder route, but Advanced Math and evidence questions are inconsistent, and pacing breaks down late in modules. |
| Below 1300 | Core rules and algebra are not yet automatic. Module 1 accuracy is the priority before any hard-item work. |
Seven habits that separate 1550+ scorers
1. Treat module 1 as the whole test
Module 1 decides your route, and easy misses weigh heavily in the scoring model. Top scorers work the first two-thirds of module 1 deliberately and check each answer once before moving on.
2. Make Standard English Conventions a perfect domain
About a quarter of Reading and Writing is pure rules: clause boundaries, supplementary elements, agreement, verb forms, modifiers and possessives. There is no interpretation involved, so the target is 100%. Learn the rule set until you can name the rule each choice breaks in under 30 seconds.
3. Build precise vocabulary, daily
Hard Words in Context items test academic words with close shades of meaning (tentative vs equivocal, qualify meaning “limit”). Review 20 flashcards a day from week 3 onward, and add every unfamiliar word you meet in practice.
4. Predict, then eliminate by naming the flaw
Before you read the choices, say what the answer must do: the word the blank needs, the relationship a transition must express, the conclusion that must follow. Then reject each wrong choice for a specific reason: too strong, off-scope, wrong relationship, true but irrelevant. If you cannot name the flaw, the choice is still in play.
5. Make Desmos a reflex
Intersections, sliders and regression turn many hard questions into 30-second solves. Drill the techniques in the Using the Desmos Graphing Calculator on the SAT guide until the keystrokes are automatic.
6. Train on the last third of hard module 2
Scores from 1500 to 1550 are decided by about 8–10 hard items per test. From week 6, do hard-only sets (difficulty 3) at real pace: about 90 seconds for R&W and about 2 minutes for Math.
7. Keep an error log with causes
Log every miss under one cause:
- C (content gap): you didn’t know the rule, word or method. Fix: reread the lesson section and add a flashcard.
- R (misread): you missed “NOT”, “most directly” or “the value of ”. Fix: underline the question’s task before you solve.
- T (trap): you fell for a designed distractor. Fix: write down which trap it was.
- X (execution): an arithmetic, sign or Desmos entry slip. Fix: add a 5-second check step.
- P (pace): you rushed or ran out of time. Fix: adjust your checkpoints.
Redo every missed question 3 and 10 days later without looking at the explanation. By week 8, most entries should be T, R or X. Those are the cheapest points to recover.
Week-by-week plan to 1550+
This plan assumes a starting point of about 1350 and 8–10 hours a week. From 1450 or higher, use the 8-week track: merge weeks 1–2, 3–4, 5–6 and 9–10 into single weeks, and skip lessons for topics you scored 90%+ on in the diagnostic. A typical week: four 75-minute lesson-and-bank sessions, two 30-minute timed sets, 10 minutes of flashcards a day and one 60-minute error-log review.
| Week | Focus | Checkpoint target |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Diagnostic (38 questions, 53 min). Boundaries and punctuation. Math: linear equations, linear functions, Desmos basics | Baseline recorded; Conventions banks 85%+ |
| 2 | Agreement, verb forms, modifiers; Transitions; Rhetorical Synthesis. Math: systems, inequalities, equivalent expressions | Every Conventions and Expression bank 90%+ |
| 3 | Words in Context and academic vocabulary (start 20 cards a day). Math: quadratic equations and functions | Words in Context banks 85%+ |
| 4 | Text Structure and Purpose, Cross-Text, Central Ideas. Math: exponential, nonlinear and polynomial functions. Full mock 1 at the end of the week | Mock 1: 700+ per section |
| 5 | Command of Evidence (textual and quantitative), Inferences. Math: ratios, percentages, data, probability, study design | Every mock 1 miss redone and logged |
| 6 | Math: area and volume, triangles, trigonometry, circles. Timed module-length sets (27 questions in 32 min; 22 in 35 min) | ≤3 misses per R&W module, ≤2 per Math module |
| 7 | Official Bluebook practice test. Hard-only sets. Clear the C entries in your error log | 740+ per section |
| 8 | Hard module 2 focus: Inferences, Cross-Text, hard vocabulary; Math parameters, circles, abstract functions. Full mock 2 | Mock 2: 1500+ |
| 9 | Your two weakest topics from the error log. Desmos speed drills | Error log mostly T, R and X |
| 10 | Official Bluebook practice test. Refine pacing checkpoints | 1520+ |
| 11 | Official Bluebook practice test. Hard-only sets in both sections | 1550+ |
Common traps
Quick recap
- 1550 means about 2 misses per section on the harder route.
- The points between 1450 and 1550 come from module 1 accuracy, perfect Conventions, precise vocabulary, Desmos fluency and hard module 2 practice.
- Log every miss by cause, redo it cold, and sit the test only when two consecutive mocks are at target.
