The 35-minute pacing plan
Average time is misleading here, because question 3 and question 21 are not the same task. Budget by position instead.
Module 1 (mixed difficulty)
| Questions | Typical difficulty | Target per question | Clock should show after the block |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–8 | easy | 45–60 s | 28:00 or more |
| 9–15 | medium | about 90 s | 17:00 or more |
| 16–22 | medium-hard to hard | about 2 min | about 3:00 left to check flags |
Harder module 2
| Questions | Typical difficulty | Target per question | Clock should show after the block |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–8 | medium | about 60 s | 27:00 or more |
| 9–15 | medium-hard | about 95 s | 16:00 or more |
| 16–22 | hard | about 2 min | about 2:00 left to check flags |
On the harder route, the opening questions of module 2 often feel like the middle of module 1, so there is less slack early. If the clock already shows under 27:00 when you finish question 8, don’t panic: trim about 10 seconds from each of questions 9–15 rather than rushing the last seven.
- Check as you go. In the first 8 questions, spend 5–10 seconds confirming each answer by substitution or a quick Desmos graph. Those seconds are the best investment on the test.
- Two-and-a-half-minute cap. If a question is still unsolved after 2½ minutes, make your best guess, flag it and move on. A later question may be easier for you than this one.
- Last 2 minutes: fill every blank, then recheck flagged SPR answers. An SPR guess almost never lands, so a finished SPR answer is worth more than a second look at a multiple-choice guess.
Hand or Desmos? A decision table
| Situation | Fastest tool |
|---|---|
| One-step linear equation, percent, ratio, unit conversion | By hand: typing into Desmos is slower |
| System of equations; a line meeting a curve | Desmos: graph both and click the intersection |
| Radical, rational, absolute-value or exponential equation | Desmos: graph each side; extraneous roots never appear as intersections |
| Vertex, zeros, maximum or minimum of a function | Desmos points of interest (click the curve) |
| Table of values → equation | Desmos regression: y1 ~ m x1 + b |
| Parameter question (no solution, tangent, “for what value of k”) | Algebra first (slopes, discriminant); a Desmos slider to confirm |
| “Which expression is equivalent to ...?” | Graph the original and each choice; the matching graph overlaps exactly. Or plug in |
| Interpret a constant or slope in context | Reasoning: no calculator needed |
| Geometry without coordinates | Sketch, label, and use the reference sheet |
The Using the Desmos Graphing Calculator on the SAT guide covers each technique step by step.
SPR entry rules
These paraphrase the Bluebook directions:
- A positive answer can use up to 5 characters and a negative answer up to 6, including the minus sign.
- A fraction that doesn’t fit must be entered as a decimal. For a repeating decimal, fill every available space: for , enter
2/3,.6666,.6667,0.666or0.667, but not.67or0.67. - Enter a mixed number as an improper fraction or a decimal:
7/2or3.5, never3 1/2. - Leave out symbols and units such as %, $, commas and degree signs.
- If more than one answer is correct, enter just one.
Always read the preview Bluebook shows under the entry box before moving on.
Beating the hardest module 2 questions
The last 6–7 questions of the harder module 2 come from a small set of families. Learn the fastest method for each.
| Family | Fastest method |
|---|---|
| Linear system with no solution or infinitely many | For and : no solution when ; infinitely many when all three ratios are equal |
Score bands for Math
| Section score | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| 780–800 | 0–2 misses on the harder route. Every question family has a practiced method, and Desmos is a reflex. |
| 730–770 | 3–5 misses, usually one parameter or circle item, one abstract-function item and one careless slip. |
| 680–720 | Secure through medium Advanced Math. Hard module 2 items are right about half the time, and time runs short. |
| 600–670 | Linear algebra is solid, but quadratics, exponentials and data questions are inconsistent. The harder route is not guaranteed. |
| Below 600 | Early-question accuracy and core algebra come first. Use Desmos to check every answer. |
Common traps
Quick recap
- Budget by position: easy items fast but checked, medium items at about 90 seconds, and 2 minutes for hard items.
- Use Desmos for intersections, nonlinear equations, vertices and regression; solve by hand for simple steps and interpretation.
- Enter SPR decimals to fill the space and check the preview.
- Learn one fast method for each hard family: parameters, discriminant, circles, exponential rates and abstract functions.
