Section I Blueprint and Score Targets
Section I of the digital AP English Literature and Composition exam in Bluebook gives you 60 minutes to answer 55 multiple-choice questions across five passage sets (8 to 13 questions per set). This section accounts for 45% of your total exam score.
Every exam includes at least two prose fiction passages (which may include drama) and at least two poetry passages, with the fifth passage being either prose or poetry. You will encounter more 20th-century and contemporary works than pre-20th-century texts, though older texts are always present. Each passage begins with a headnote giving the author, title, genre, and publication year, with every fifth line numbered and archaic or unusual words glossed in footnotes.
Because there is no penalty for wrong answers, never leave a question blank. Using the estimated composite formula:
your raw MCQ targets (out of 55) pair with essay averages to hit overall estimated cut lines as follows:
| Target AP Score | Estimated Weighted Cut | Safe MCQ Target (out of 55) | Essay Average to Pair With It (out of 6) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 (Top Marks) | ~67% | 38–42 (69%–76%) | 4.0–4.3 |
| 4 (Strong Credit) | ~56% | 31–35 (56%–64%) | 3.5–3.7 |
| 3 (Qualifying) | ~44% | 24–28 (44%–51%) | 3.0 |
The 60-Minute Timing Plan
With five passage sets in 60 minutes, your baseline budget is 12 minutes per set. However, an 8-question contemporary poem takes far less time than a 13-question 19th-century prose excerpt. Adjust your clock dynamically by question count, saving a 2-minute buffer at the end.
| Set Size | Reading Time | Question Time (~45s/item) | Total Set Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8–9 Questions | 2.5–3.0 min | 6.5–7.0 min | 9–10 min |
| 10–11 Questions | 3.5 min | 8.0 min | 11.5 min |
| 12–13 Questions | 4.0 min | 9.5 min | 13.5 min |
Minute-by-Minute Checkpoints
These checkpoints assume five sets of 11 questions. Real sets have 8 to 13 questions, so move each checkpoint to match the sets on your exam.
- Minute 0–1: Scan the first headnote and question count. Do not spend two minutes shopping through all five sets; start on Set 1 unless it is an archaic text that immediately stalls you.
- Minute 12: Complete Set 1 (Questions 1–11).
- Minute 24: Complete Set 2 (Questions 12–22).
- Minute 36: Complete Set 3 (Questions 23–33).
- Minute 48: Complete Set 4 (Questions 34–44).
- Minute 58: Complete Set 5 (Questions 45–55).
- Minute 58–60: Return to flagged questions and verify that every single question has a selected answer before time expires.
