How to Allocate Your Time
Success on the AP World History: Modern exam is an exercise in proportional allocation. Because Units 3, 4, 5, and 6 carry the heaviest weight on the exam (roughly 12%–15% each, or about half of the entire test combined), a flat schedule that spends equal time on all nine units is a tactical mistake.
This 16-week study plan moves chronologically from c. 1200 to the present, pairs each unit with a specific exam skill, and builds toward the fully digital Bluebook exam format. You will need 4.5 to 6 hours per week—roughly 45 minutes a day across five days, plus a longer weekend block for timed writing and review.
| Period | Units | Exam Weight | Recommended Study Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| c. 1200 – c. 1450 | Unit 1 (Global Tapestry) & Unit 2 (Networks of Exchange) | ~8%–10% each (~16%–20% total) | 3 weeks (19% of prep time) |
| c. 1450 – c. 1750 | Unit 3 (Land-Based Empires) & Unit 4 (Transoceanic Interconnections) | ~12%–15% each (~24%–30% total) | 4 weeks (25% of prep time) |
| c. 1750 – c. 1900 | Unit 5 (Revolutions) & Unit 6 (Consequences of Industrialization) | ~12%–15% each (~24%–30% total) | 4 weeks (25% of prep time) |
| c. 1900 – Present | Unit 7 (Global Conflict), Unit 8 (Cold War & Decolonization) & Unit 9 (Globalization) | ~8%–10% each (~24%–30% total) | 3 weeks (19% of prep time) |
| Mocks & Review | Cross-period synthesis, rubrics, and full-length practice exams | 100% integration | 2 weeks (12% of prep time) |
Step 0: The Diagnostic Baseline
Before starting Week 1, take a baseline diagnostic to see how you handle stimulus-based questions and timed typing.
- If you are starting in the fall alongside your school course, take a 20-question MCQ set and 1 SAQ covering Units 1 and 2.
- If you are starting a 16-week sprint in January, take a half-length diagnostic (28 MCQs in 28 minutes, 2 SAQs in 26 minutes, and 1 LEQ in 40 minutes).
Do not worry about missing content from units you have not studied yet. Instead, score your diagnostic for reading speed on primary sources and task-verb accuracy (identify vs. describe vs. explain).
