The format, as published
- Written exam built on the KMK Bildungsstandards for continued foreign languages.
- Tasks come partly from the IQB common task pool (since 2017): Schreiben (text-based analysis, comment and re-creation), Sprachmittlung (German to English mediation) and, in many Länder, Hörverstehen/Leseverstehen.
- Since the 2022 exam year English has been sat on largely common dates across the Länder (IQB).
- Working time is about 4–5 hours depending on level and state (unverified).
- Marked 0–15 points.
- Several Länder replace a Klausur with an oral Kommunikationsprüfung.
