How the Composite Score Works
AP Biology reports a single score from 1 to 5, built from two equally weighted 90-minute sections:
- Section I: Multiple Choice (50%) — 60 four-option questions in Bluebook (60 raw points).
- Section II: Free Response (50%) — 6 questions viewed in Bluebook and answered by hand in a paper booklet (34 raw points: two 9-point long questions and four 4-point short questions).
Because both sections carry the exact same weight (50%) despite having different raw point totals, one free-response point is worth significantly more than one multiple-choice point.
The Weighting Formula
Courselo calculates your estimated weighted score fraction (, expressed as a percentage from 0% to 100%) using the exact 50/50 split:
Look closely at the denominators:
- Each MCQ point adds to your overall composite.
- Each FRQ point adds to your overall composite.
There is no penalty for wrong answers on either section. On Section I, an unanswered question is a guaranteed zero, whereas a random guess on a four-option item gives you a 25% chance of gaining .
Estimated Score Cutoffs and Targets
College Board does not use fixed percentage cutoffs (like 90% for an A in a school class). Instead, psychometricians equate each year’s exam after administration to account for slight variations in question difficulty, ensuring that a score of 3, 4, or 5 represents the same level of mastery every year.
Courselo maps your weighted fraction to the 1–5 scale using these realistic estimates (the Course and Exam Description gives no cutoffs, and College Board does not publish them in advance):
| AP Score | Qualification Descriptor | Estimated Composite () | Balanced Target (MCQ / 60 + FRQ / 34) | MCQ-Heavy Target | FRQ-Heavy Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Extremely well qualified | ~70%+ | 42/60 + 24/34 | 48/60 + 21/34 | 39/60 + 26/34 |
| 4 | Well qualified | ~57%–69% | 35/60 + 19/34 | 41/60 + 16/34 | 30/60 + 22/34 |
| 3 | Qualified | ~43%–56% | 26/60 + 15/34 | 32/60 + 12/34 | 22/60 + 17/34 |
| 2 | Possibly qualified | ~28%–42% | 17/60 + 10/34 | 22/60 + 7/34 | 14/60 + 12/34 |
