Section II Architecture and Score Targets
Section II lasts 90 minutes, accounts for 50% of your AP Biology score, and consists of 6 questions worth 34 raw points. Under the hybrid digital format, you read the prompts in Bluebook and write all answers (including graphs and visual model additions) by hand in a paper booklet. You may use a four-function (with square root) or scientific calculator (or Bluebook’s built-in Desmos scientific calculator) and the official AP Biology Equations and Formulas sheet.
| Target AP Score | Estimated Overall Weighted % | Target FRQ Raw Score (out of 34) | Safe Point Distribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 (Top marks) | 24–26+ points | on Q1 & Q2; on Q3–Q6 |
Note: Score cutoffs are realistic estimates; College Board sets exact boundaries after each administration.
Minute-by-Minute Timing Plan
You manage your own 90 minutes across all six questions. Do not get bogged down in Q1 and Q2 at the expense of easy points in Q3–Q6.
| Clock Time | Elapsed | Task | Action Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0:00–0:22 | 22 min | Question 1 (9 pts) | 3 min reading/annotating variables on scratch paper; 19 min writing Parts A–D. |
| 0:22–0:45 | 23 min | Question 2 (9 pts) | 3 min reading; 8 min constructing the graph (Part B); 12 min writing Parts A, C, D. |
| 0:45–0:55 | 10 min | Question 3 (4 pts) | 1.5 min reading; 2 min per part (A–D). |
| 0:55–1:05 | 10 min | Question 4 (4 pts) | 1.5 min reading; 2 min per part (A–D). |
| 1:05–1:15 | 10 min | Question 5 (4 pts) | 1.5 min reading; 2 min per part (including model drawing/marking). |
| 1:15–1:25 | 10 min | Question 6 (4 pts) | 1.5 min reading; 2 min per part (A–D). |
| 1:25–1:30 | 5 min | Audit | Verify graph units and error bars on Q2; fill in any blank Identify or Predict prompts. |
The Six Question Blueprints
Every Section II exam follows an identical blueprint across its six questions. Each short FRQ (Q3–Q6) assesses a different Big Idea and a different course unit.
Question 1: Interpreting and Evaluating Experimental Results (9 Points)
Built around a multi-part authentic experiment (often combining signaling, gene expression, or energetics with tabular/graphical data).
- Part A (1 pt):
Describea biological concept or process shown in the background. - Part B (3 pts):
Identifyexperimental methods (dependent/independent variables, negative or positive controls) ORDescribedata patterns. - Part C (3 pts):
Analyzedata (using error bars to evaluate significance),Calculatea rate/percentage/chi-square value, orIdentifyexperimental design elements. - Part D (2 pts):
Predictthe outcome of a modified experiment (1 pt) andJustifyusing biological principles and evidence from the prompt (1 pt).
