In longer fiction and drama, setting is far more than a physical backdrop: it is the social, cultural, and historical situation that governs how characters think, act, and collide. On the AP English Literature exam, setting questions make up 3–6% of Section I multiple-choice items, and analyzing how a setting’s values pressure characters is a high-scoring strategy for Section II essays—especially Question 2 (Prose Fiction Analysis) and Question 3 (Literary Argument).

In Unit 1, you looked at setting as physical location and time of day or year. In longer works, characters inhabit a milieu—a web of social customs, class hierarchies, economic realities, religious beliefs, and historical pressures.

A setting is never neutral. Every social environment rewards certain behaviors and punishes others. When you read a passage, ask: What does this society care about most?
