Section I Blueprint and Score Targets
Section I of the AP Statistics exam is taken entirely in the Bluebook testing app. You have 90 minutes to answer 42 four-option multiple-choice questions, which account for 50% of your total composite score (roughly of the total exam per question). There is no penalty for wrong answers.
Of the 42 items, 36 are discrete standalone questions and 6 are grouped into two 3-question sets built on shared scenarios:
- Question Set 1: Probability, random variables, and probability distributions (Unit 2).
- Question Set 2: Regression analysis (Unit 5).
Questions are weighted across the four Statistical Practices:
| Statistical Practice | Weighting | Approximate Question Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Formulate Questions | 5–10% | 2–4 questions |
| 2. Collect Data | 20–30% | 8–13 questions |
| 3. Analyze Data | 25–35% | 11–15 questions |
| 4. Interpret Results | 25–35% | 11–15 questions |
Because College Board has not published official cut points for the revised exam, Courselo uses conservative composite estimates. Assuming equal performance across Section I and Section II, aim for these raw Section I benchmarks:
- Secure 5 (~78% buffer): 33+ / 42 (Estimated 5 cut is ~70%, or 30 / 42)
- Strong 4 (~57%): 24–29 / 42
- Qualifying 3 (~44%): 19–23 / 42
Minute-by-Minute Timing Plan
Do not work linearly if a question stalls you. Use a Two-Pass System inside Bluebook using the Mark for Review and Option Eliminator tools.
| Time Elapsed | Clock Remaining | Milestone | Action Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–30 min | 60 min left | Questions 1–16 | Pass 1 (Block A): Answer every sub-2-minute question. If a calculation or reading block takes >90 seconds to set up, cross out dead options, enter your best guess, flag it, and move on. |
| 30–60 min | 30 min left | Questions 17–32 | Pass 1 (Block B): Keep going. Whenever you reach a 3-question set (College Board does not say where in the section the sets appear), invest about 90 seconds reading the shared stem: it pays off across three full points. |
| 60–75 min | 15 min left | Questions 33–42 | Pass 1 (Block C): Finish all remaining questions to the end of the exam. |
| 75–87 min | 3 min left | Flagged Items | Pass 2: Open the Bluebook review screen. Attack flagged questions with fresh eyes and full calculator verification. |
| 87–90 min | 0 min left | Final Sweep | Confirm all 42 questions have an answer selected. Never leave a question blank. |
