Section II Architecture and Analytic Scoring
Section II gives you 90 minutes in Bluebook to answer 4 free-response questions (FRQs). Unlike older exam formats, every question carries equal weight: 10 raw points each, making each question worth 12.5% of your total AP exam score (and Section II worth 50% overall).
Scoring is analytic (point-by-point) rather than holistic. Each question’s scoring guideline breaks the 10 points across specific components inside labeled parts (A, B, C, with subparts i, ii). Except where explicitly noted, points are earned independently, and AP Readers allow consistent use of earlier incorrect answers in downstream parts.
| Score Target | Estimated Composite Needed | Section II Target (out of 40) | Average per FRQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Secure 5 | ~78% (Courselo buffer) | 31–34 points | ~8 / 10 |
| 5 Cut (Est.) | ~70% | 28+ points | 7 / 10 |
| 4 Cut (Est.) | ~57% | 23+ points | ~6 / 10 |
| 3 Cut (Est.) | ~44% | 18+ points | 4.5 / 10 |
Minute-by-Minute Pacing Plan
College Board gives no official suggested time per question, so you must enforce your own discipline. Because all four questions are worth 10 points, spending 35 minutes on one question starves another.
| Elapsed Time | Action | Budget |
