This guide explains how the Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) course works: what your child sees, how the practice papers are done together, what is in the grown-ups area, and a simple way to fit it into an ordinary week.
What your child sees
Everything in the Key Stage 1 course is read aloud, using your device’s own voice. At this age, it works well to sit beside your child, especially at first, so you can enjoy it together and see how they get on.
Lessons
Each topic has a short animated lesson that Budlet, the course’s friendly seed mascot, reads aloud. Along the way there are “your turn” questions, so your child joins in rather than only watching. The first lesson is free in full, the others start with a free preview, and lessons can be watched again. Watching a lesson a second time is a perfectly good choice, and there is no rush to move on.
Games
A game is a round of questions on one topic, or “Mix it up”, which brings in questions from across topics. When your child misses a question, they see “Not yet” and “Show me why”, and then a similar question, so they can have another go at the same idea straight away. Questions missed on an earlier day come back later, without you having to keep track.
Stars
Each topic can earn 1 to 3 stars. Stars are earned by answering and are never taken away, so a tricky day never costs your child a star they already have. In the grown-ups area, the same stars read as Working towards, Expected and Greater depth.
